Complete paint removal system for aircraft components
The complete removal of modern chemically resistant paint finishes from aircraft components without damage to both the substrate and existing pre-treatment process is presenting an ever-increasing problem.

The Dasic Paintblast system is designed to overcome this problem by combining the chemical action of specially formulated ambient temperature stripping solutions with that of mechanical impingement using a specialised range of blast equipment incorporating Dasic Paintblast D103 as an effective but safe media. This system has been developed by Dasic International Ltd., in conjunction with British Aerospace and has been widely accepted and adopted by aircraft and component manufacturers and operators.

The use of very high tensile steels in the construction of hydraulic landing gear, for example, limits the exposure of such components in paint stripping solution due to possible embrittlement and is often found necessary to utilise a heated stripping solution to obtain reasonable results. Further heat treatment is then required to ensure de-embrittlement. Finally, any cadmium plated parts have to be replated. The Dasic Paintblast system eliminates this long and costly processing procedure.
Further examples of paint removal utilising the Dasic Paintblast system are as follows:
The removal of high baked epoxy coatings from close tolerance aluminium and magnesium components without damage to the substrate.
The localised removal of protective finishes from airframe sections (anodised sections of wing areas, rivet heads, etc).
The removal of finishes from composite (glass or carbon fibre) components without removing the vital fibre bonding gel coatings, using Dasic D143 as the initial chemical stage. Dasic D143 is safe for use on composite materials and is approved to Def Stan 1443.


Stage One:

Components are immersed in Dasic D53 or D590 tank products for a minimum period of 30 minutes. Alternatively, Dasic D23V, Dasic D550 or Dasic D143 application strippers may be used at this stage.If time is available, a prolonged immersion time will have the twin advantages of removing a large percentage of paint in most cases in addition to speeding up the subsequent blast stage.

Stage Two:

Rinsed and dried components are then progressed to a post immersion stripping using Dasic Paintblast D103 a specially processed and naturally occurring lignocellulose material in conventional shot blasting equipment. The following parameters are recommended:
Nozzle diameter of 8mm
Pressure 2/3 bars
Distance from work 10-20 cm
Time 30 - 60 seconds
The foregoing operation parameters have been determined by experience gained using Dasic Paintblast D103 media in the aviation industry and are intended as a general guide. Slight variation of operating techniques may be required to obtain optimum results on size, shape and type of article being processed.
